For 155 years, Penhaligon’s has enchanted the world of perfumery, capturing the essence of British wit, luxury, and craftsmanship in every bottle. With a legacy rooted in artistry and an unwavering dedication to excellence, the house continues to delight discerning noses with its exceptional fragrances.

Acquired by Puig in 2015, Penhaligon’s became a cornerstone in the company’s expanding portfolio of niche fragrance houses. Yet, the story of Penhaligon’s begins much earlier, in a chic Hammam bath on Jermyn Street, London, where a young Cornish-born barber named William Penhaligon first made his mark.

Driven by a passion for perfumery and the art of "coiffure," William opened his pioneering barbershop in 1870 at 66 Jermyn Street in London. It quickly became a haven for the distinguished gentlemen of Mayfair, attracting illustrious clients such as Oscar Wilde and even the Shah of Persia. Inspired by the aromatic fumes of the Turkish Baths next door, William created his first fragrance, Hammam Bouquet—a bold and exotic scent that remains iconic to this day.

William’s artistry extended beyond the fragrances themselves. He introduced an elegant bottle design, distinguished by its flask-like shape, a round glass stopper, and a bow-tied neck—a hallmark of Penhaligon’s that endures. With his first creation, William Penhaligon established himself as both a master craftsman and a visionary pioneer.

The brand’s legacy flourished under William’s son, Walter, who took over the family business in the early 20th century. Walter’s creation of Blenheim Bouquet, commissioned by the 9th Duke of Marlborough, solidified Penhaligon’s place in history.

In 1903, Penhaligon’s was awarded its first Royal Warrant by Queen Alexandra, the Queen Consort to King Edward VII, marking the beginning of a prestigious relationship with the British monarchy. Over the decades, this esteemed recognition was extended by two more royals, further solidifying the house's reputation for exceptional quality and craftsmanship. In 1956, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh granted Penhaligon’s its second Royal Warrant, a testament to the brand’s enduring appeal among the royal family. In the late 1980s, HRH The Prince of Wales (now HM King Charles III) added his own endorsement by granting a third Warrant, reflecting his appreciation for the house’s heritage and dedication to excellence. Most recently, upon ascending to the throne, King Charles III conferred a fourth Warrant, a significant milestone that underscores Penhaligon’s lasting commitment to the highest standards of service, quality, and artistry.

In 2016, Penhaligon’s continued its innovative spirit with the launch of the Portraits collection. This playful and imaginative series embodies the eccentricities of aristocratic characters, brought to life through distinctive scents and bottles adorned with hand-finished metal animal-head caps. Among them is The Inimitable William Penhaligon, a fitting tribute to the house’s visionary founder.
